Project Spotlight: Tide Gate Replacement, Fairfield, CT

Steve Sternberg discusses the City of West Haven's Beach Street Resiliency Project.
The Long Island Sound Partnership, in collaboration with Connecticut Sea Grant, hosted a Coastal Resilience Tour of West Haven on October 2, 2026, highlighting completed and ongoing waterfront resilience initiatives throughout the City.
RACE Partners Steve Sternberg and Azure Dee Sleicher participated in the tour, with Steve presenting RACE’s ongoing work on the City’s Beach Street Resiliency Project. RACE’s scope includes site data collection, numerical wave modeling, and development of resiliency designs aimed at enhancing beach stability, maintaining public access, and protecting Beach Street and adjacent infrastructure from erosion and undermining.
As shoreline erosion continues to impact the area, RACE is currently pursuing Emergency Authorization from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP) for interim roadway protection measures while simultaneously advancing the analysis, design and permits for long-term beach enhancement and coastal resilience solutions.
