Maintenance & Improvement Dredging of Navigation Channel at Greenwich Point Park, Greenwich, CT

Greenwich Point.JPG

Dredging activities in Greenwich Cove are anticipated to begin on or around December 1, 2025

The Town of Greenwich Parks & Recreation Department will be conducting maintenance and improvement dredging of their 1,000-LF navigation channel and turning basin located in Greenwich Cove, in Greenwich, CT.  The channel is a privately maintained (non-federal) navigation corridor providing vessel access from the mooring field in Greenwich Cove, and overall greater waters of Long Island Sound, to the Town-maintained docks on Tod’s Point in Greenwich Point Park.

Under current condition, water depth in the channel is limited to approximately 5- to 6-ft at MLW.  Once dredged, the channel will have a new controlling depth of approximately 9-ft at MLW.  In addition to the primary channel, a secondary auxiliary channel to the adjacent boat ramp will further be constructed.  A total of approximately 19,000 CY of material is anticipated to be dredged for the project.  The primary channel was last dredged circa 1961, with dredged spoils from the project being utilized to construct the boat storage and parking areas still located on-site today.

RACE performed an initial condition hydrographic survey of the channel in 2014, which identified the growing shoaling concerns for the area.  Following a review of the current mooring field and marine stakeholder fleet, a decision was made to deepen the channel from its historically authorized depth of 7-ft at MLW to 9-ft at MLW.  RACE prepared State and Federal permit applications (including sediment sampling and testing), final dredging design, assisted the Town during construction bidding, and will further provide the Town with pre- and post-dredging construction administration support.

The project was analyzed for environmental, habitat and state-listed species impacts, and dredge material sampled and tested in accordance with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) and Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) requirements.  The material was subsequently approved for relocation to the Western Long Island Sound Disposal Site (WLDS).  Dredging activities are anticipated to begin on or around December 1, 2025, with completion anticipated on or around January 31, 2026.
