Mystic River Boathouse Park Project Nearing Completion

The Mystic River Park will provide public access to the Mystic River while supporting rowing programs, marine science education, and community fitness.
RACE Coastal Engineering is proud to be part of the team helping prepare the future home of Stonington Community Rowing at Mystic River Boathouse Park in Stonington, CT.
The Town of Stonington received funding from State of Connecticut grants to rehabilitate and redevelop the waterfront site into a community destination featuring ADA-accessible coastal walkways, parking, lawn areas, a boathouse, rowing docks, access piers, and a pedestrian boat ramp. The facility will provide public access to the Mystic River while supporting rowing programs, marine science education, and community fitness activities.
RACE coordinated with the project team to permit the waterfront improvements that include two timber piers, a pedestrian boat ramp, tidal wetland enhancements, and sills. As part of the permitting process RACE also assisted the Town with the Flood Management Certification application for the site’s buildings.
Once permit applications were submitted, RACE completed and compiled final design documents for the ADA-accessible piers, rowing docks, and pedestrian boat ramp. The gangways and low-profile floating docks are designed specifically for rowing shell access, launching, and protection. The docks are anchored using helix-style moorings and elastomeric lines that adjust with the changing tide versus traditional pilings that would potentially interfere with rowers, row shells, or oars.
Construction of the project started in 2025 and is currently wrapping up. RACE completed construction oversight for the timber piers, boat ramp, and docks to confirm that the components were installed in general compliance with the project drawings and specifications.
