RACE Project Manager Spotlight

Steve Sternberg, PE

Steve Sternberg began his career at RACE after earning a Civil Engineering - Structural Degree from Manhattan College, in Riverdale, NY in 2010. During his time at RACE, Steve has been involved in assessing and designing a broad range of coastal projects for commercial, municipal, residential, and private facilities and has taken a lead in managing RACE’s hydrographic survey and dredging design services. As part of his work, Steve has participated in over 100 hydrographic surveys for dredge planning, structure siting, and coastal analysis purposes.

Most recently, Steve managed, from permitting through construction, the successful completion of the South Benson Marina Dredging and Beach Nourishment project for the Town of Fairfield, CT. As part of this work, over 27,000 cubic yards of sandy material was dredged from the marina navigation channel, and beneficially reused onto adjacent Jennings Beach for beach nourishment purposes. The project was completed on-time, on-budget and benefited both marina and beach users. The marina is considered one of the largest municipal marinas in the Northeast and the project was most recently recognized by the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) as a Best Restored Beach for 2020.

In addition to his work at South Benson Marina, Steve was instrumental in the design and construction of Bridgeport Harbor’s award winning Pleasure Beach Pier & Water Taxi Dock, where he oversaw construction related activities as part of the restoration of this historic, summer destination.

Steve also performed storm damage assessments throughout the Tri-state area after Hurricanes Irene and Sandy in 2011 and 2012 and was called again to review storm damage in Hilton Head, South Carolina following Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

While building his engineering field and design experience, Steve furthered his coastal engineering expertise through achieving his Graduate Certificate in Coastal Engineering from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. RACE President Devin Santa notes “Steve has shown thorough dedication and commitment to the coastal engineering field, as well as the art of successfully managing projects. We are thrilled to have him as part of the RACE Team.”

When not surveying a mooring field or performing other coastal engineering work, Steve enjoys spending his free time with friends and family, playing lacrosse, or golfing (or at least trying to). Steve and his wife Diana are new parents to a son, Drake. We salute, and wish the utmost safety to Diana as she returns this week to the frontlines of the Intensive Care Unit at YNHH.
