RACE maintains experience and expertise related to Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) Grant Applications.
Azure Dee Sleicher, PE, VP of Coastal Engineering at RACE, has prepared three applications with two of these submissions awarded funding. In 2012, Azure Dee assisted the Town of Wethersfield, CT with the application that funded a new transient boat marina, consisting of seven slips and 51 moorings designated for the use of transient, non-trailerable recreational vessels, at their Cove Park Facility on the Connecticut River. Azure Dee was the Professional Engineer of Record and successfully managed the permitting, analysis, design and construction of the facility through completion in 2015.
Azure Dee’s experience with Phase 1 of the Cove Park project led to RACE’s involvement in Phase 2 of the park improvement project for a new boat ramp in 2018. A popular spot for fishing, kayaking & boating, the Town of Wethersfield received a small harbor improvement project grant from the State of Connecticut to replace the existing, deteriorated boat ramp at the park. The concrete boat ramp was undersized and routinely submerged during flood stages making limited use of it. The Town desired a new ramp in a different location that could be utilized at extreme high water conditions.
To optimally design the boat ramp’s structure and foundation, RACE performed site data collection including preparation of topographic, hydrographic and geotechnical surveys to prepare an existing subsurface condition assessment.
RACE advanced the final design and prepared Construction Drawings for bidding and construction, including a headwall, planks, excavation and grading, parking lot flow patterns and redistribution of excavated material on the parking lot per the regulatory authorizations. RACE performed construction phase services to assist the Town with the successful completion of the new ramp in the summer of 2019.
